Humanist point of view? Lolz. Warmonger applebaum in favor of every U.S. war in our lifetime. She was ahead of her time tho. She advocated for killing Palestinian journalists 20 years ago. Fucking sick human.

Slate article she wrote in 2002. She is a warmonger. Like many “national security journalists”

I have checked up a bit on this article, and indeed, that old article doesn't look good. It is obviously written in a moment of anger, and she does have a tendency to write sharply about things she has an opinion about, so, also here. But I also feel that there might be an element of sarcasm in the article.

What had upset her then was, apparently, the very hateful tone in the Palestinian TV programs – and, obviously, especially how they had made children chant that Israelis should be killed.

She has commented on it later, in an interview from October 2024, and there she completely denounces the idea of journalists being legitimate targets: https://www.mediaite.com/media/podcasts/hes-talking-like-hitler-the-atlantics-anne-applebaum-warns-trump-wants-absolute-power-in-second-term/

In general: She is often speaking for acting, as the prevailing appeasement policy toward certain dictators and other bad guys doesn't seem to be working.

I, personally, may not agree to everything she says in that direction. What I like about her, and why I recommend reading her posts and articles, is that she tells some of the things that other journalists seem to pretend that they do not know about.

We need openness and problems to be uncovered, if we should have a chance to deal with them.

To that end, it is, of course, also a matter of culture: she was born and grew up in the USA, and a typical way of seeing people among Americans is that they are either good or bad. This is not a universal way of thinking, even though you can find it around the globe – in some countries, however, it is the norm, in others not.

That black and white view on people often leads to defining some as enemies, others as friends. An alternative way of seeing people could be that they all have good and bad elements in their thoughts and actions, as seen from your position, and that circumstances, and your interactions with them, will expose some of these more than others.

Hence, with this more holistic point of view, people tend to weigh in the situation when judging others, or they refrain from judging them altogether.

Anne Applebaum, as a born American, is obviously (as I see it) influenced by the black and white thinking, more than the holistic one.

But then again – as I am to the holistic side, I can see why she sometimes expresses strong feelings for or against something: She's a journalist and sees things close-hand, and some details that many others don't know about. Having seen in detail how some people treat others badly, perhaps even at a large scale, it may be difficult to feel any sympathy for them, and that can lead to harsh statements.

I appreciate that you bring up the topic. We should always look further when looking at anything – there is always more to the story than the few lines of text can reveal.

She’s influenced by her paycheck depending on U.S. involvement in foreign wars. Black and white thinking? Guess you can excuse her lifelong warmongering as “black and white” thinking. Whatever that means. Our society rewards these sickos in the national security state because we spend billions on war. And sarcasm?! Come on man. She’s no Jonathon swift. If she hadnt spent the rest of her life advocating for invading other countries I may entertain what he call sarcasm motive. But we know that’s ridiculous. Why you interested in applebaum anyway?
